Artist Statement

The concept of landscape, for a Canadian artist, is historically focused not only on the land in which we live but also on the spiritual territory that shapes our way of life. We embrace the untamed and mysterious, celebrate regional differences, and depict the sovereign dignity of a proud people and majestic nation. We are about place. For me, that place resides in the rocky outcrops and open fields of the prairies, within the thick underbrush and shimmering shadows of the rainforest, in the thundering surf and quiet tidal pools found along the rugged shores of the west coast, and in the comfort and solitude of my own garden. Landscape becomes an intimate vision of nature that resonates as the central focus of my painting practice.

I have always been drawn to the landscape and, in painting, concerned with its place in contemporary Canadian art; as a result, much of my work embraces both conceptual and material experimentation where I look for the unexpected but respect the traditions that comprise landscape genre. My aim is to provide a transcendent sense of nature that is recognizable but not always understood; the work is intended to innervate a sense of place rather than merely impart an image.
